What a residential sump pump is actually built for
A sump pump moves water out of the pit at a fixed rate. It is designed around normal groundwater movement and typical heavy storms.
Sunday was different.
When rainfall comes down that quickly, the amount of water entering the ground rises fast. The water table jumps faster than a residential system is designed to handle.
Once more water enters the pit than the pump moves out, the level rises. That is true even when the pump is running properly.
Think of it like a drain with more water coming in than going out. The drain is working. It is simply being overwhelmed by the amount of water.
How to tell if your pump was overwhelmed or actually failed
An overwhelmed pump usually shows a few clear signs:
- The pump was running while the water was coming in.
- The pit stayed full or the pump kept cycling.
- Water entered around the perimeter or through the slab.
- The water level dropped after the rain stopped.
A failed system looks different. These are things you check yourself:
- The pump never turned on. If that happens, it is an emergency plumbing call, not a maintenance item.
- The float was stuck and could not activate the pump.
- The breaker tripped.
- The power went out and there was no backup.
- The discharge line was clogged or disconnected.
- The check valve allowed water to fall back into the pit.
The distinction matters. A pump that ran continuously during Sunday’s storm is very different from one that never started.
The five things that keep a pump ready
Test it. Pour a bucket of water into the sump pit and watch the pump start, move the water out, and shut off. It takes a few minutes and gives you a simple check before the next major storm.
Keep the pit and intake clean. Dirt and debris interfere with the pump or float. Check that the float moves freely and is not blocked by anything in the pit. Regular plumbing maintenance helps keep small problems from becoming bigger ones.
Have a battery backup. A power outage during a major storm is one of the most common ways a working sump pump becomes useless. Sunday showed why having backup power matters.
Check the check valve. Its job is to stop water from draining back into the pit after the pump shuts off. If it is not working properly, the pump has to handle that returning water again.
Inspect the discharge line. It should stay clear and have enough slope to move water away from the foundation. Look for ice, crushing, disconnection, or anything blocking the outlet. A pump is only as effective as the path it has to discharge the water.
